8 Questions you should ask before Vaccinating your pet
1. Is my pet sick right now? It used to be common practice in veterinary clinics to update vaccines on all animals entering the hospital. This means that animals admitted to be treated for an illness or injury, were vaccinated. NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE VACCINATED IF IT IS SHOWING SIGNS OF ILLNESS.
2. Has my pet had a bad reaction to a vaccination before? It is also common practice to repeat annual vaccines on animals who have had serious reactions in the past. Generally, they are “premeded” with antihistamines and steroids.
3. Does my pet have a personal or family history of:
vaccine reactions
convulsions or neurological disorders
severe allergies
immune system disorders
If your pet has any of the above listed conditions, it is not healthy and should not be vaccinated.
4. Do I know if my dog is at high risk of reacting?
5. Do I know how to identify a vaccine reaction? Facial swelling, anorexia, fever, vomiting, diarrhea can all indicate a reaction to the vaccine
6. Do I know how to report a vaccine reaction? There is currently no government agency tracking vaccine reactions in animals
7. Do I know the vaccine manufacturer’s name and lot number? This is information that you have a right to
8. Do I know I have a choice? You have the right to decline vaccines for your pet.
I borrowed this list from The National Vaccine Information Network; www.nivc.og.
The National Vaccine Information Network is an invaluable resource for children’s vaccine information. You need to visit this sight before you have your children vaccinated. Knowledge is so important when confronted with decisions regarding your child’s healthcare. You have a right to decline vaccines for your pet and your children.
